Science demonstrations at local K-8 schools (2020–present)

Zhukhovitskiy group members perform exciting experiments over Zoom and in-person with K-8 students and engage them to think about science and the scientific method.

Examples of experiments:

  • Multicolored rain: do hot or cold things move faster?

  • What is inside our markers?

  • How to make a cup out of milk?

  • How to make a ball that bounces?

  • The science of diapers.

Impact:

  • 7 schools, 18 visits, 1010+ K-8 students in the Durham, Wake, and Orange counties

Testimonies:

  • “The science experiment was interesting and engaging for my students. More than half of the class asked for materials so they can be Color Scientists of their own. Would love to schedule another experience. Great way to give students real scientific experiences virtually. And you had an awesome assistant!!” - Gretchen Capps (K)

  • “Thank you so much for coming to our 'classrooms' to do science experiments with us. The experiments you did tied in with our Science Standard: Changing States of Matter and helped the students to further understand the concept. The experiments were well planned out to make for a fun and interesting class. The kids loved to participate by sharing their thinking and guesses at what would happen. We would love to have you again. Thank you very much!” - Natasha Khadka (3rd grade)

  • “I just wanted to let you all know how thankful my students and I were to have you all come in and present those very cool physical and chemical changes! This was such a great way to get the community and students involved in engaging science reactions. Many students had not been exposed to those compounds and reactions before this. Being able to see, observe, and interact with some of the compounds was an awesome experience for the students. I know they will be talking about this for a while. Thank you all for making such a positive impact for a Durham school. I hope you all can come again in the following years.” - Meridith Herndon (8th grade)
